"You must unlearn what you have learned"

"You must unlearn what you have learned."

- Yoda, Jedi Master

I read this quote a few months ago and it inspired me to unlearn what I had learned about my business, Rocking Life. The end result is a relaunch of Rocking Life as Hypnotherapy Devonport and Launceston. For you it means more focus on hypnotherapy and targeted individual session programs for anxiety, weight loss and quitting smoking. What does "you must unlearn what you have learned" mean?

As you know, we go through life learning things. What we learn shapes how we view the world and our reality. Luke in Star Wars had grown up with no knowledge of the Force. He had learnt that he could only jump a certain height and that it was impossible to lift boulders with his mind. These perceptions formed his reality. For Luke to learn to use the Force Yoda had to teach him to unlearn what he knew about reality. For those of you that aren’t Star Wars fans another example was during the 15th to 17th centuries when a weird psychiatric disorder swept through Europe and many people thought they were made of glass. People would do all sorts of things to prevent themselves being shattered to pieces. They changed their lifestyle, changed their habits and behaviours to protect themselves. One medical account describes a man who had to relief himself standing up because if he sat down his buttocks might shatter! He constantly applied a cushion to his buttocks, even when he was standing, for his own safety. Now this seems like a pretty silly belief but for the people back then it was very real. Take a moment to think about the beliefs you have. For example: “I can’t tell the truth because I’ll be judged.” “Money is hard to get.” “Work is hard.” “I can’t…” “I don’t want to get close to this person in case I get hurt.”

The impacts of what you've learned

What if these beliefs weren’t true? You would be limiting and restricting your life, just like the people that believed they were made of glass. The only difference between the people that believed they were made of glass and our beliefs is that theirs were centred on their physical body. Ours are centred on our emotions, relationships and dreams. We fear that if we face a set back or get hurt we will shatter and possibly die; just like the people believing they were made of glass and if something made contact with them they would shatter and die. Unlearning what you have learned allows you to live without restrictions and limits. Things you might learn from unlearning what you know: “It is not my job to please people in life.” “Be myself; there’ll never be anyone else like me.” “Heartbreaks help me learn more about myself and love, they are part of living life.” “Rejection is a process, it will always happen. I can learn how to cope with rejection just like how I cope with other things in my life; people dying, mistakes, accidents.” If things aren't quite working out for you, or you think maybe you're believing something that is restricting you call me on 0437 868 969 and I'm sure I can help you find a way forward.

Something to think about...

“Many of the truths we cling to depend on our point of view.” - Yoda, Jedi Master
